ABOUT
Nathan Coe’s appreciation for the technical side of photography began from a young age, leading him to pursue a BA Hons degree in Photography & Media in Gloucestershire, England. After graduating, he moved to Nantucket where he developed what is now known as his signature style, seamlessly weaving together what one might describe as a nostalgic nod to tradition with a forward-thinking eye for the contemporary.
Best-known for his lush, evocative, cinematic beach landscapes, in recent years Nathan has introduced the unexpected in the form of subtle human intervention. His inclusion of the nude female figure, often shown with her back to the camera as though she is blissfully unaware of the artist’s presence, represents the innate human connection to nature in its purest form.
Celebrating the beautiful unpredictability of both the natural landscape and of the human body, each of Nathan’s works capture a visceral, organic moment in time. Intended to be framed and hung in large format, his sprawling photographs appear almost like paintings as their sublime energy radiates throughout any space. He also offers his largest prints as single editions, making them true one-of-a-kind works of art.
A solo exhibition of Nathan’s double exposures at Cavalier Galleries in 2014 propelled him into the world of fine art photography, cementing his status as one of the leading artists in his field. Nathan’s captivating body of work has since been featured in Vogue, Town & Country, and Billboard, among others, and many of his best-known photographs such as Breaking The Rules, Colony, and Endeavor have become internationally recognized collector favorites as they sell out near the end of their editions. He continues to produce new work today, with his latest series shot on the island of St. Barthélemy between 2023-24.
MEDIUM FORMAT PROCESS
With his early training in a traditional darkroom, Nathan holds a unique understanding and a passion for the magic of the old-school technique of chemical photography. Since turning to a medium format digital process, Nathan now captures and prints his work using the most advanced technologies on the market, allowing the rich colors of his vast landscapes and the depth of his portraits to take central focus.
A perfectionist at heart, Nathan offers museum-grade archival photographs that can be printed up to 140 inches wide or larger upon request. Constantly tinkering and experimenting with new equipment, Coe ensures that his work is always at the cutting edge of the fine art photography industry. He currently shoots with Phase One 645 cameras and Schneider lenses, and prints on a 60-inch Canon PRO-6000.
Nathan’s photographs are highly stylized, thoughtfully curated, and deeply transformative. Situating his viewer in the position of his own artistic eye, Nathan invites us to step inside his captivating scenes to see the world through his gaze. His work thus becomes a window into frozen vignettes in time, never to be experienced the exact same way again.
World-renowned designers, architects, and collectors continue to invest in Nathan Coe’s innovative, limited edition photography. Offering his work in editions of only five or less, his photographs are widely sought after and each include a signed certificate of authenticity.
